Guerilla Games' likely farewell to Killzone reads: The message ends with a touching shout-out to the multitude of fans who have visited the series' website over the years.

The message assures players that multiplayers modes and player data in Killzone Shadow Fall and Killzone Mercenary will not be affected, though it will no longer be possible to create new clans in Killzone Shadow Fall and Mercenary's online servers were unexpectedly closed last year. Visiting the website's URL now displays a message from Guerrilla Games, as well as a link to the PlayStation website. Unfortunately, the retiring of the Killzone website greatly diminishes fans' hope of the series continuing. Related: God of War Mod Gives Kratos His Classic PlayStation Look Back

Many gamers took this as a tease for a brand new installment in the franchise, perhaps handled by a different studio with Guerrilla hard at work on Horizon Forbidden West. Somewhat recently, a Helghast soldier, a frequent Killzone enemy and series icon, made a small appearance in Sony's pre-launch reveal of the PS5's UI. While the last title in the series released in 2013 as a PS4 launch title, Killzone fans have remained hopeful that the series would continue.
